When is the right time to open your pool?
This is the time of year when Mother Nature plays with us, teasing with longer days and sunshine, followed by frosty nights. But I believe spring 2018, may finally have arrived. So when is the right time to open your pool? At Simply Pools, we believe earlier is better than later, for several reasons.
The ideal time to call your professionals to book your opening is when the ice has completely thawed from your pool. Trust me, you don’t want them to show up too early only to find the liner in solid ice. Varying conditions like the amount of sunlight your backyard gets, colour of your liner, and how deep your pool is, play a factor in how quickly it thaws. Once your free of ice, is the perfect time to book your opening.
There are more advantages to opening earlier rather than later. The most important being the prevention of algae growth. Algae can grow rapidly and quickly take over a pool with slimy green if given enough sunlight and the right temperatures. This can take seemingly endless amounts of scrubbing to remove it. So removing the cover earlier before algae has a chance to grow, means less time and chemicals to get your pool back to where you want it to be…swimmable!
The longer you wait, the more airborne debris and spring pollens make there way into the water, making cleanup more time consuming as well. Not to mention, spring rains push earthworms to the surface of your yard and they make their way into your pool or into the puddles on your cover. This is something you want to try to avoid, as we have seen birds poke holes into pool covers in their excitement feasting on what’s been left for them to snack on.
If you have opened your pool early, When Mother Nature does finally leave the cold behind and gives us a decent day and nighttime temperatures, you’ll be ahead of the game and ready to enjoy your investment. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your pool before the summer heat hits without blasting the heater. Try using wetsuits or rashguards to maintain body heat. Or simply sit back and enjoy the look of sparkling water while sipping cocktails.
Whatever your reasons for opening your pool early, one thing is certain, when you get the urge to fire up the BBQ for the first time this year, enjoying the blue of clean water in your pool, makes your BBQ taste so much better!
Open early rather than later, and enjoy your backyard longer.
