5 Questions to ask about fiberglass pools

March 21, 2011 By admin

Top 5 questions to ask when purchasing a fiberglass pool.

 Q. I heard that Fiberglass pools can pop out of the ground?

 Answer.

As the internet has a vast amount of information, I get this question a lot. There is only one way that a Fiberglass Pool or for that matter any pool can pop out of the ground, IMPROPER installation. When installing our Fiberglass pools we always install an 8” atmospheric pipe otherwise know as a dry well, this is placed at the deep end of the pool and ties into a weeping tile. This ensures that if there is ever any hydrostatic pressure (water under the pool) the water can be pumped out from this pipe. We always install this but in most cases depending on undergoroung water tables and soil condition you may never see water in this pipe. So, when choosing a pool contractor always ask about this.

 Q. Do you use sand as backfill and base?

 Answer

This is always an option, however in recent years we have been using a material called H.P.B (high performance bedding, pea gravel. ¼ inch chip limestone etc.) This material has a 95% to 97% compaction rate without tamping. This forms a fantastic base for the pool and allows for excellent drainage as there is no screening in this material. In short a much more stable material for base and drainage.

 Q.  What is the warranty on the Pool and color?

 Answer.

Most Fiberglass pool manufacturers warranty the color against fading, bubbling etc for a period of 5 to 15 years. The shell or structure is warrantied for 25 to 35 years.

 Q. Can you provide references?

 Answer.

Your pool contractor should provide at least three references that you can contact. Ask the references about the good and the bad points, such as communication with the contractor, on time, returning phone calls etc. This will give you a good idea of how reliable the contractor is.

 Q. How long will it take to install my Pool?

 Answer.

Realistically it should take about 5 days to have the pool installed full of water and all your mechanical installed. The variables are the electrical hook up and gas hook up if you decide to go with a gas heater. Any hardscape or landscape that you choose to install will also add time to your project, however most times you can expect to be done in a couple of weeks.
